Based on the novel “Up in the Air” written by Walter Kim, this film is directed by Jason Reitman and written by Sheldman Turner and Reitman. Starring George Clooney, Anna Kendrick and Vera Farmiga, Up in the air is the story of a corporate downsizer and his expeditions to different parts of the country. The film explores the life and philosophies of this extremely professional man and the audiences are given an insight to the life of a very unusual personality.
George Clooney as Ryan Bingham is the show stealer as usual. The plot of the movie surrounds the life of Bingham and his travels. Bingham is hired by big corporate for conducting employee lay offs. No matter how influential or powerful a boss is, at times it becomes difficult for him to chuck off his employees. Ryan is a man with a strong will and has a go and get it attitude. The motivational speeches delivered by him during laying off sessions are sure to impress you. The employees become tongue tied with his outstanding personality and impressive speeches.
Ryan is a man who believes that it is best to lead a relationship free life. He never indulges in any kind of bond or relationship just to stay happy and free. Bingham has certain principles in life, which he follows strictly. He doesn’t have a secret personal life. He deliberately stays away from his family and meets them occasionally. In the film we find him meeting his family only once during his sister’s wedding. His only aim in life is to accrue 10 million frequent flyer points.
During one of his business flights, Bingham meets a woman named Alex. Vera Farmiga plays Alex. She looks awesome and sizzles in her performance as well. Bingham takes up a liking for the woman and starts a casual relationship with her. Slowly he realizes the feelings dormant within him for a long time. Though their relationship ends in a tragic note but the incident leaves a deep impression on his mind.
The character of Natalie Keener is very vital to the plot of the film. Though Natalie is much younger than Bingham and is a naïve Cornell graduate, but she takes a higher hand over him at his office. Bingham’s office chose to keep him grounded at the head office in Nebraska because of Natalie’s new layoff system. As the story progresses, Alex realizes the futility of his job and Natalie also gets frustrated with the unnatural demands of her work. The film is very realistic and the audiences are made to weep in the theaters for a few times.
